Judges Statement: The judges were excited to find an artistic solution for community-oriented infill development in Keller Court Commons. Starting with an ideal location only 5 blocks from historic downtown Petaluma the project team clearly looked to design a neighborhood that stood out. By intentionally locating the garages and parking on an alley and eliminating vehicles from the common area, this project fosters a social, pedestrian environment that brings neighbors together. The smaller home plan designs are efficient and sustainable but also serve to draw people out of their house for group gatherings at the bocce ball court, fruit orchard or clubhouse. The use of agrarian materials familiar to the Sonoma County area- such as corrugated metal, raw cedar board siding, and exposed concrete, coupled with a rainbow of pops of color through glass and colored lime plaster give the project an authentic, yet modern feel. One of the more eye-catching details was the angled porch railings that also served as beautiful flower beds on each of the units.
